OVER 50 YEARS OF SERVING SOUTHERN ILLINOIS

Meller-James & Associates Veterinary Service, with clinics in Anna and Vienna
celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2007. Dr Joe Meller moved to Union County from
northern Illinois and began to practice veterinary medicine with a practice in Anna
in 1957. He treated farm animals as well as companion animals from his home in rural Anna, and then in the practice building he built on land at the edge of town that he purchased from the Walton Farm. In 1964 he was joined by Dr. Harold James, who was originally from Buncombe, Illinois. In 1972 Dr Gary McKibben, originally from Pope county, joined the practice. In the early 70's, the doctors had outgrown the original clinic building, and the hospital was enlarged and remodeled.

As the practice grew in the 1970's, Dr's Meller and James decided to add a satellite
clinic in Vienna to serve the counties in the middle and eastern parts of Southern
Illinois. The clinic was housed in the Vienna Livestock Auction barn until the barn burned and destroyed the clinic in 1985. The partners soon purchased and remodeled a new clinic on Highway 146 in Vienna, and added livestock handling facilities in the early 1990's.

Dr Nancy Kucera, also from the Chicago area, came in 1980, and Dr. Steve Cerny, from Cobden, Illinois in 1983. Dr McKibben left the practice in 1988, and Dr. Stuart
Anderson, from Springfield, Illinois joined in 1989. Dr. Steve Overstreet, a native
of Carrier Mills, Illinois, came to the practice in 1995. Dr. Jana Owens joined the
practice in 1996 and practiced there until her death in October of 2000.

Dr Meller retired from the practice in 2000 after serving Southern Illinois'
veterinary needs for 43 years and building the practice to a multi-doctor practice.
After his retirement, two more veterinarians were added; Dr. Kristi McCullough, from
Taylorville, Illinois and Dr. Randy Werkheiser, from Wisconsin. In 2003, another
local veterinarian, Dr. Monica Keith joined the practice. Dr. Keith grew up in Alto
Pass, Illinois. Dr. McCullough left the practice in 2005, and Dr. Heather Jones
joined in 2005. Dr. Jones is from the St. Louis, Missouri area. In June of 2007, Dr
Amy Antas from Streator, Illinois joined the practice, as Dr. Keith decided to pursue
her career in Missouri. In 2008 we welcomed Dr. Erin Hiskett to the practice.  Dr. Hiskett, a native of Kansas, is a graduate of Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine.  We currently have 9 doctors serving clients and patients.
